The original "Invincibles" were a radical republican splinter group active in Dublin in the 1880s. On May 6, 1882, they Assassinated Thomas Henry Burke, Permanent Under-Secretary at the Irish Office, and Lord Frederick Cavendish, Chief Secretary for Ireland, in the Phoenix Park. Carey and Skin-the-goat, mentioned in the song "Monto" made famous by Luke Kelly, were members of the group, but, under questioning, Carey ratted on his accomplices. He was shot while emigrating to South Africa under police protection, an event referred to in that song:

When Carey told on Skin-the-goat,
O'Donnell shot him on the boat;
He wished he'd never been afloat,
The dirty skite.
It wasn't very sensible
To tell on the Invincibles;
They stuck up for their principles,
Day and Night,
By going up to Monto,
Monto, Monto;
By going up to Monto,
Langaroo
